New York Yankees (54-29) @ New York Mets (39-47)
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a better defensive night than what we saw from Gio Urshela last night. I mean, sure, we’ve seen better plays. But, to have four or five web gems in one evening, while also hitting a bomb is as impressive an individual performance I’ve seen.
In particular, the throw from his ass in the 5.5 hole was unbelievable. Jeff McNeil hit a hard hit shot which had a chance of getting through the infield. Urshela thought otherwise; diving to his left, he snagged the ball, then spun around in the dirt and threw a strike to first from his ass getting McNeil by two steps.
Just like the previous game, the Yankees got off to a quick 2-0 lead with back-to-back doubles by DJ LeMahieu and Aaron Judge. Gleyber Torres then followed that up with an RBI single of his own.
Jeff McNeil scored the Mets’ first and only run with a first-pitch leadoff home run in the bottom of the first. German, making his first start since returning from the IL, went on to stifle the Mets’ mediocre offense for six innings.
The Yankees would add some insurance runs in the sixth inning when Didi Gregorius sent Mets’ starter Jason Vargas back to the bench after a solo home run. Wilmer Font replaced Vargas and was met instantly by a solo shot from Gio Urshela to stretch the lead to 4-1. Gleyber Torres would add another RBI single in the seventh to bring us to the final score of 5-1.
Guess what else?! The Yankees completed a game without using any of the “Big Four” relievers! I’m absolutely shocked!
On a critical side note, I watch a lot of baseball, and I’m not sure I’ve ever watched a more infuriating pitcher than Jason Vargas. He is the slowest and most obnoxious pitcher I’ve seen on a mound. Nothing made me happier than seeing the boys blow him with a bomb (thank you, Didi!) and knocking his ass out of the game in the sixth inning!
